Uptime Institute Tier (I–IV)
The Uptime Institute Tier classification is a four-level standard for data center infrastructure topology, from Tier I basic capacity to Tier IV fault tolerant. Tier III requires concurrent maintainability, meaning any component can be serviced without shutting down IT. Tier ratings describe the building’s design and operations, not the site, but higher tiers raise expectations for redundant utility feeds and backup power.
